The Importance of Vitamin D: Part 1

Today, I decided to go for a run as the weather looked absolutely beautiful. The sun was shining bright, the skies were blue and the mountains looked majestic. It made me really appreciate the importance of the sun. I’m constantly telling my friends that I’m solar-powered. I need sunshine, not just for my mood but also because of how important vitamin D is to your health.

Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble pro-hormones which are responsible for enhancing the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D is also important for the maintenance of healthy bones, teeth and is suggested to provide your body with protection and better overall health and wellness.

The best way to get vitamin D is to spend 15 minutes a day in the sun, with early morning or late afternoon being the best times to do so. If you’re fair skinned, experts suggest going outside for 10 minutes in the midday sun in shorts and a tank top with no sunscreen. This will allow you to get enough radiation to produce about 10,000 international units (IU) of the vitamin. It’s important to remember to wait about 30 minutes to shower to allow your body the time it needs to utilize all the sunlight.
It’s important to note that dark-skinned individuals and the elderly produce less Vitamin D from the sun and many individuals don’t consume enough of the nutrient from dietary sources either.

A great way to consume vitamin D is by consuming foods that are a natural source of vitamin D such as fatty fish species like catfish, salmon, tuna and eel as well as whole eggs, milk and cheese.
